Carlos Pena: It reveals the case Karadima
The case has many borders.
who by now has just ended, as the priest's lawyers prepared an appeal, is just one part.
It is of course the incredible leniency that the Chilean church-and Cardinal Errazuriz-special show in this whole affair. An institution like the church that aspires to lead the life of the people and in that modeling effort or attempt to shape the souls of children and young people, has an obligation to be more inquisitive and alert to the conduct of its members. Errazuriz
And it was not: his agility was below that of a pachyderm.
To this is added the role of political authorities and judges. A secular state has the duty to allow public and private practice of all faiths, but it has a duty of care that, at the time of worship, not violate the rights of individuals. Unfortunately, public authorities in Chile, mistaking their own convictions to those who serve, the position held before the Church often behave more like gullible faithful and alert authorities.
How else to explain that what seems obvious to slow Vatican child abuse, no less-deserves investigation far short just shy of the Chilean justice system?
An institution like the Church, which aims to guide human lives from cradle to grave, with schools and universities and enjoys subsidies from the general revenues must be exposed, both by their own authorities as the state, higher levels of scrutiny.
But not only the attitude of Church and State as a whole, regarding this case should be analyzed.
Priestly Union is still one of the most striking associations of the Chilean Church.
This organization manages a large housing stock and has a large network. Until recently, even after this scandal broke, was led by Bishop Andrés Arteaga, one of the most faithful vocations Karadima did wake up (and one of the five bishops who, in mysterious ways, contributed to the Church). Of course the mere fact of belonging to the Priestly Union, or even direct it, not be deemed objectionable, but no doubt that All this requires an explanation. It is not reasonable for the Vatican which deserves punishment for the bishop Arteaga, and the other members of the Priestly Union, is hardly reason for silence. It is not that Arteaga and other members do Karadima-and so did the Vatican, but certainly may do so on their own role in the case.
Finally, there is the dimension, so to speak, spiritual. Karadima-like the Legionaries of Christ who founded the trickster of Marcial Maciel-cultivated an intimate kind of religious ritual, the Church away from socially committed. It's the kind of spirituality that often attract social groups dissatisfied with the consumer crave religious practice free from the madness of the cross. In the eighties, when the Church would ask where is your brother? - Karadima taught that faith could well do without these questions if the sacraments, especially confession "were made in a timely and scrupulous.
Of course, it would be ridiculous to even suggest that there is a necessary link between religiosity and such cases as those of Karadima and Maciel, but no doubt that personalities like theirs more easily flourish where the public practice of religion becomes meaningless social and where faith is reduced to be two or three times a handful of beliefs and maintain una relación íntima entre el creyente y Dios mediada por el sacerdote.
